Aleksandr Donodin awarded RAEng Fellowship

Congratulations to TRANSNET Research Fellow Dr Aleksandr Donodin, who has been awarded a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship.

Aleksandr’s Fellowship project, “Next generation of Energy-efficient Optical Regional and Data Centre Connections”, will pioneer solutions to reduce the soaring energy demand of digital infrastructure. By combining bismuth-doped fibre amplifiers and optical frequency combs, the research aims to cut optical network power consumption by 30–50% per bit while enabling transmission capacities beyond 200 Tb/s.

The research will be carried out in close collaboration with an exceptional group of partners: Lightera (USA), Coherent Corp. (UK), Nokia Bell Labs (USA), Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI (Germany), Pilot Photonics (Ireland), Enlightra (Switzerland), NICT(Japan), and KDDI Corporation (Japan). Together, they will co-develop amplifiers, sources, and testbeds, culminating in large-scale field trials on deployed fibre.

Aleksandr joins a number of TRANSNET colleagues who have also received RAEng fellowships, and we look forward to the exciting research he will start with this funding.
