TRANSNET student celebrated as an Emerging Young Scholar
Henrique Buglia, TRANSNET student researcher, has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2024 PTC Emerging Scholar Program.
The Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) Emerging Scholar Program is an initiative designed to acknowledge and assist promising scholars in the dynamic realm of information and communications technology. This award is dedicated to identifying and honouring exceptional scholars around the world, who are currently pursuing a PhD or have recently completed their doctoral studies within the past five years.
Henrique, a PhD student in the Optical Networks Group (ONG), said: "I am delighted to be recognised by the Pacific Telecommunication Council (PTC) through this award, and the support it provides to promising scholars in the realm of information and communications technologies. I am eager to participate and present my research at the PTC`s Annual Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, and to be part of the distinguished group of people who have also received this honour since the program’s establishment. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Professor Polina Bayvel, for the steadfast support throughout my PhD research, as well as to former and current members of the Optical Networks Group."
Henrique is an electrical engineer and currently a PhD researcher under the Head of ONG and TRANSNET Director, Professor Polina Bayvel. In his current role, Henrique delves into the intricate world of network physical layer modelling, devising innovative techniques to mitigate and model the nonlinear signal distortion in optical fibre transmission systems. He has developed the first ultra-wideband analytical model valid for Raman amplification, an essential optical amplification technology upgrade (already installed in many deployed networks) for increasing the data throughput and avoid the capacity crunch. Additionally, his work also involves designing backbone networks, including optimisation and evolutionary algorithms. His award-winning research is jointly funded by Microsoft under the Optics for the Cloud research Alliance and by the UK government.
As a PhD candidate, Henrique has published his work in multiple journals and has presented his work in leading conferences in the field of optical communications, for example, OFC and ECOC. He has been on the organising committee for the “Hack Your Research (HYR)” initiative at OFC and ECOC for 2 years running, giving researchers in the field of optical communications an opportunity to showcase their work, and network and interact with like-minded people.
This year, a total of six scholars have been selected for the award, joining 56 other scholars worldwide who have received this honour since the program’s inception in 2013. This year, the scholars will be presenting their research at PTC’s annual conference in Honololu, Hawaii, from 21 to 24 January 2024.
