TRANSNET PhD student recognised for excellence in optical communications

Wenting Yi, a PhD researcher at the TRANSNET programme has been announced as one of the recipients of the Corning Women in Optical Communications Scholarship, recognised for her research working on optical transceivers.

Wenting Yi is among the three recipients of the annual Women in Optical Communications Scholarships, established to champion gender diversity in the vastly expanding field of optical communications.

The merit-based scholarships are awarded to prominent early-career researchers driving innovation forward in the field of optical communications, while leading the emergence of new technologies to support the growing challenges in the field.

Wenting, who is now in the final year of her PhD studies, was selected for her work on coherent and direct detection optical transceivers for long-haul and short-reach optical links.

Commenting on her latest achievement, Wenting said:

“I am very honoured to have been selected as the recipient of Optica Corning Women in Optical Communication Scholarship this year. It is truly wonderful news especially now as I am at the end of my PhD. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Robert Killey, for giving me this opportunity to pursue this PhD at the Optical Networks Group (ONG) at UCL, and for his fantastic support and guidance throughout my entire study. I am also deeply grateful for the tremendous help I received from many former and current ONG members in the past four years.”

The scholarships of USD 3,000, endowed by Corning Incorporated, are distributed annually to supplement tuition, mandatory fees, and other expenses. Additionally, winners also receive travel expenses, housing, and registration fees to attend the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition (OFC), where they were recognised at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, 07 March 2023.

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to Wenting on behalf of the entire team.
